Was macht das Projekt aus?

Ziel des Projekts Cloud Native LEAP VPN ist es, den quelloffenen VPN-Stack von LEAP in die Cloud zu integrieren.

Schon heute bietetr diese Software einen starken Schutz der Privatsphäre für eine große und wachsende Nutzerbasis durch die VPN-Dienste von Riseup Networks, The Calyx Institute und Solitech. Die Integration von Cloud-nativen Werkzeugen wie Terraform und Kubernetes wird die Barrieren beim Aufsetzen von LEAP VPN für Anbieter abbauen, indem die Einrichtung stark standardisiert und modularisiert wird. Dies ermöglicht eine bessere Skalierung und Effizienz der VPN-Dienste. Die wichtigsten Komponenten des VPN-Systems, wie OpenVPN, kresd, menshen, Prometheus und obfsvpn, werden als wiederverwendbare Cloud-native Bausteine zur Verfügung gestellt. Diese Bausteine werden durch Terraform Modules und Helm Charts bereitgestellt, die die Infrastruktur als Code beschreiben und die Bereitstellung von Software ermöglichen.

What is the project about?

The aim of the Cloud Native LEAP VPN project is to integrate LEAP's open source VPN stack into the cloud. This software offers strong privacy protection to a vast and growing userbase. The integration of cloud-native tools such as Terraform and Kubernetes will lower the barriers to setting up LEAP VPN for providers by making the setup highly standardized and modularized. This will enable better scaling and efficiency of VPN services. The most important components of the VPN system, such as OpenVPN, kresd, menshen, Prometheus, and obfsvpn, will be made available as reusable cloud-native building blocks. These building blocks will be provided by Terraform Modules and Helm Charts, which describe the infrastructure as code and enable the deployment of software.

LEAP, und damit auch Cloud Native LEAP VPN, richtet sich direkt VPN-Anbieter, die im Bereich um die Hunderttausend(e) Nutzer*innen arbeiten. Das umfasst beispielsweise mittelgroße bis große Organisationen, NGOs und Unternehmen. Indirekt richtet sich das Projekt damit auch an alle, die diese VPNs schlussendlich einsetzen.

Which audience does the project address?

LEAP, and therefore also Cloud Native LEAP VPN, is aimed directly at VPN providers with around 100,000 users. This includes medium-sized to large organizations, NGOs, and companies. Indirectly, the project is also aimed at everyone who ultimately uses these VPNs.
