What is the project about?
Digital communication is everywhere. Private and confidential data on smartphones and computers connected to the internet are highly attractive: government and private entities monitor journalists and activists, for example, while control-obsessed individuals install stalkerware on the computers and smartphones of (former) partners or children, and companies try to spy on their competitors or employees. SpyCheck aims to detect spyware based on its network connections: it sets up a separate Wi-Fi or cable network to which the device under investigation is connected and analyzes its data traffic. SpyCheck is inspired by existing but outdated solutions such as TinyCheck and SpyGuard.
Which audience does the project address?
SpyCheck is primarily aimed at private individuals, initiatives against (digital) violence, journalists, and organizations who defend themselves and others against surveillance and espionage.
What is to be achieved?
SpyCheck is a program that runs on Linux and is programmed in Go. It will be available as a package for various Linux distributions and, if necessary, as a live system that can be started from a USB stick or SD card.
