What is the project about?
With the passing of §26 of the Telecommunications Digital Services Data Protection Act (TDDDG) in October 2024, the final framework for the phase-out of cookie banners has been established. The goal of OpenPIMS-2 is to adapt the Open-PIMS solution funded in Round 13 to the final legal requirements, extend support to all desktop and mobile browsers, and prepare for recognition by the Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information. OpenPIMS is a tool that allows users to store their privacy and data protection settings, simplifies access to websites by reducing the number of individual decisions that need to be made, and makes some pages accessible to users with physical disabilities. OpenPIMS-2 offers a privacy-friendly, accessible alternative to cookie banners and enables legally compliant consent management that strengthens users' digital self-determination.
Which audience does the project address?
OpenPIMS-2 is primarily aimed at companies, organizations, and institutions that want to operate a legally compliant PIMS system for consent management. The target audience also includes developers and operators of websites and mobile services who are interested in a data protection-compliant solution.
What is to be achieved?
A proxy will be created that enables users to manage cookie storage consent centrally and across platforms. In addition to the necessary backend, browser extensions for Firefox and Safari are being developed that allow configuration directly in the familiar environment.
