What is the project about?
Delta Chat offers a secure alternative to WhatsApp. Users do not need a phone number or other personal data to chat securely. The Delta Chat Channels project aims to integrate encrypted broadcast channels into the Delta Chat Android app. Broadcast channels allow messages to be sent to many people at once, who cannot see who else has subscribed to the channel.
Which audience does the project address?
The goal is to reach all current and future users of Delta Chat on Android. Delta Chat is currently widely used in Eastern Europe and Russia, particularly to spread political content that would otherwise be banned or blocked. NGOs could use channels to reach many people securely, anonymously, and simultaneously.
What is to be achieved?
The existing broadcast lists in Delta Chat Android are being expanded with three core features: Lists will be end-to-end encrypted, an invitation code can be generated for easy access, and messages will be displayed in a separate chat instead of among the direct messages with the sender.
